Earlier this month, Guardian Angels became the first school in Tampa Bay to receive STREAM certification which is issued by the Florida Catholic Conference and the National Council for Private School Accreditation. They are the fifth school statewide to earn this distinction.

In 2016, Guardian Angels Catholic School introduced a STREAM curriculum. STREAM provides a focus on science, technology, engineering and math, similar to commonly-known STEM programs. It also includes two additional areas: religion and art.

“We are fully immersed in our STREAM program, and we are excited about the variety of learning experiences this program brings to our students. On any given day, our classes cover composting, coding, the catechism, classic art and so much more,” said Mary Stalzer, principal.

Some of the principles of a STREAM-certified school include:

• They seek to increase the participation of groups that are under-represented in the sciences.
• They increase content literacy for all students including those who do not pursue technology-related careers or additional studies in the STREAM disciplines.
• They are inclusive. They serve a broad population and operate on the dual premises that math and science competencies can be developed and that all students need access to STREAM competencies to become full participants in 21st Century education.
