SUMMARY: The assistant manager assists the store manager to ensure efficient and effective operations and exceptional customer service in a neat and attractive store that is stocked with quality merchandise at preferable pricing. The assistant manager supervises team members, volunteers, sales, donations, internal fiscal controls and promotion of the store in the community as delegated by the store manager. The assistant manager supports the manager in ensuring strong financial performance of the store to support the mission and programs of the St. Vincent de Paul Council of Upper Pinellas County.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Ensures compliance with written procedures for store operations, including opening and closing the store; merchandising (receiving, sorting, displaying, pricing and rotating donations); internal fiscal controls and security procedures for staff and volunteers.
  • Provides exceptional customer service.
  • Trains, schedules and supervises team members, both paid and volunteer, ensuring compliance with store policies. Ensures all team members understand their duties and responsibilities as representatives of SVdP. Resolves questions and problems fairly and efficiently.
  • Motivates and inspires the team to achieve store productivity goals.
  • Ensures merchandise is displayed in a customer friendly and attractive manner. 
  • Supervises and assists with sorting, tagging, displaying and disposal of donated items, providing leadership to staff and volunteers.
  • Ensures the telephone is answered in an efficient and courteous manner, offering assistance to the caller as needed.
  • Provides prompt and accurate checkout, opening second register as needed to ensure short wait times to checkout.
  • Ensures clothing and household items are available to be processed for the sales floor.
  • Monitors merchandise levels in the store and assists with processing as needed.
  • Maintains store property and facility in a safe, clean, aesthetically pleasing manner.
  • Ensures material is processed, recycled or thrown away in a timely manner.
  • Ensures accurate handling of cash, vouchers and charge transactions and maintains accurate documentation.
  • In the absence of the Store Manager, is responsible for all cash management in accordance with SVDP policy with regard to bank deposits, daily receipts and the preparation of cash register receipts, etc.
  • Prepares daily cash report and deposit and takes deposits to the bank, as delegated by the manager. Assists with other reporting as delegated by manager.
  • Covers for cashiers and other staff during breaks and covers any job or function when needed with willingness to work hours necessary to keep the store staffed to capacity.
  • Assists truck driver and assistant with delivery and pick up schedules.
  • Assists clients with vouchers to ensure they receive what is needed while following store policies and providing exceptional customer service.
  • Works collaboratively with the Manager and other team members on all facets of the Thrift Store.
  • Represents SVdP in a positive manner to donors, customers and the public and provides exceptional customer service.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the mission, vision and philosophy of St. Vincent de Paul.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or general education development (GED) certificate required.
  • Associate’s degree preferred.
  • Experience in thrift stores or retail management preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ANDS ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency with cash register operations, cashiering, closing and deposits required.
  • Solid communications skills, both written and verbal, required.
  • Strong interpersonal, supervisory and customer service skills required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and point of sale software preferred.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate the English language.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and to operate and train others on the use of cash registers.
  • Ability to organize, multitask, prioritize and work under pressure.
  • Ability to walk around store, assist with collecting donations, placing and rearranging items on racks and shelves.
  • Detail oriented and observant.
  • Team-oriented to achieve organizational objectives.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
